PERSPECTIVE PURCHASES THAME-BASED CHARTERED PLANNING FIRM

Capital and Trust - January 18, 2023 -

Perspective Financial Group has made its first acquisition of the year by buying Thame-based Ian J Hunt Chartered Financial Planners.

The acquisition brings in approximately 70 clients and £37m in assets under management to Perspective’s national advice business. The group also announced that it has completed negotiations for eight more acquisitions, which are pending approval from the Financial Conduct Authority.

The founder and director of Ian J Hunt, Ian Hunt, stated that after 35 years as a financial advisor, it was time for him to retire. He was pleased to have found a company with a similar attitude and ethics to his own in Perspective Financial Group.

Perspective’s CEO, Ian Wilkinson, announced that they are starting 2023 with strong momentum and have a large pipeline of acquisitions, both big and small, to grow further at scale and pace. Perspective Financial Group has always prioritized putting clients at the center of their decision-making process to ensure good client outcomes and aligns with the new Consumer Duty principle.

What this acquisition means for the buyer

The acquisition of Ian J Hunt Chartered Financial Planners supports Perspective Financial Group’s ongoing strategy of expanding its national footprint through targeted acquisitions of established advisory firms. Although relatively modest in size, the deal adds a loyal client base and additional assets under management while strengthening Perspective’s presence in the South East.

The transaction also highlights Perspective’s continued focus on succession-led acquisitions, particularly where business owners are approaching retirement and looking for a long-term home for their clients. By integrating firms with similar values and service standards, Perspective can continue scaling its operations while maintaining continuity for clients and staff. The announcement of a wider pipeline of acquisitions also signals the group’s confidence in the market and its ambition to accelerate growth through further consolidation opportunities during 2023.

What this means for sellers in the sector

For independent financial advisers considering retirement or succession planning, this deal reinforces the importance of finding an acquirer that aligns culturally as well as commercially. Many smaller advisory firms are now prioritising buyer compatibility, client continuity, and long-term service quality over purely financial considerations.

The transaction also demonstrates ongoing demand for smaller, well-managed IFA firms with stable client relationships and recurring income. Consolidators remain active across the market and are increasingly pursuing acquisitions of varying sizes as part of wider regional growth strategies. For advisers looking to exit the market, joining a larger group can provide access to enhanced compliance support, technology, operational resources, and succession certainty while ensuring clients continue to receive consistent advice and service.

Market trend context

The UK financial advice market continues to experience strong consolidation activity, driven by regulatory complexity, succession planning challenges, and growing operational costs for smaller firms. Consumer Duty requirements and increased expectations around client outcomes have also encouraged many advisers to consider partnerships with larger organisations that can provide greater infrastructure and support.

At the same time, acquisitive wealth management groups are seeking to grow assets under management and expand geographically through strategic purchases of established local firms. Transactions involving retiring founders remain especially common, as many independent advisers approach succession decisions without internal buyers in place. As a result, acquisitive national groups continue to play a major role in reshaping the UK IFA landscape.

How Capital & Trust typically supports transactions like this

Capital & Trust supports financial planning firms, wealth managers, and independent advisers with acquisitions, succession planning, and strategic growth transactions across the UK advisory market. Retirement-led transactions often involve balancing valuation objectives with the need to protect long-standing client relationships and ensure cultural compatibility between buyer and seller.

Support typically includes preparing firms for sale, identifying suitable acquirers, managing confidential discussions, and overseeing negotiations through to completion. In highly relationship-driven sectors such as financial advice, finding the right strategic fit can be just as important as achieving favourable commercial terms. Capital & Trust works closely with business owners to help facilitate discussions and introductions that support continuity for clients, staff, and the long-term future of the business.
